Square Enix has announced that it will shut down the online service for Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light on January 31, 2024, at 3 PM JST / 1 AM EST. The company will hold multiple Grand Finale events leading up to the mobile game’s 10th anniversary on January 23, 2024, before converting the app into a permanent offline version.
Square Enix first revealed Super Light in October 2013. The Cygames-developed mobile game launched in Japan on January 23, 2014. It exceeded 3 million downloads in less than a month after its release. The developers gradually added content to the mobile game that eventually gathered a massive roster of over 1,600 recruitable monsters as of this announcement.
The game’s producer, Issei Ohta, published a letter explaining Super Light‘s online closure. He preferred to use the term “conclusion of service” rather than the more common “end of service.” After carefully managing the massive game’s balance and inflation in the previous two years, his team decided that the 10th anniversary would be the most suitable time to close its curtains.
The team will release the final story area to conclude the game’s storyline on October 31, 2023. Square Enix will then hold the last official tournament, with the finals set to take place in a physical venue in January 2024. After the offline conversion on January 31, 2024, existing players will still be able to read the game’s 4-panel comics and play several high-score ranking quests with their collected monsters.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light is available on iOS and Android mobile devices in Japan.
