The game was originally announced in May 2021 coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the RPG franchise. At the time of the announcement, Square Enix listed no release platforms listed, nor a release window for the game. After over three years of silence, Square Enix teased that new information would be coming with an X (formerly Twitter) post back in late May 2024.

Dragon Quest III originally came out for the Famicom in February 1988 and for the NES in January 1992. As a reminder, a version of the game is currently available on the Nintendo Switch with reworked graphics under the name Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation.

The Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake release date is November 14, 2024, and it will appear for the Nintendo Switch. The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will appear in 2025.
