There’s been a fair amount of buzz around Capcom’s stylish-action Devil May Cry series over the last few months, with rumours of a new installment developed by Heavenly Sword developer, Ninja Theory, first surfacing prior to the E3 Expo in Los Angeles earlier this year.

The Ninja Theory rumour originated in the pages of Game Informer magazine’s May issue. The original quote was as follows:

“Loose Talk has learned that Enslaved isn’t the only game Ninja Theory is working on-we’ve heard that the Cambridge, England developer is being tapped for the next Devil May Cry.

It is not totally unexpected, however; Capcom has said that although it is shying away from Western developer for new IP, it would continue to utilize them for known franchises, which DMC certainly is.”

While no hints at another Devil May Cry game surfaced at E3, a more recent quote from Capcom’s head of Research & Development, Keiji Inafune, revealed that the publisher was, in fact, considering a more “western touch” for the next Devil May Cry game due to relatively low sales in Western regions.

Perhaps this is what this recently-filed trademark for “DMC” by Capcom is related to:

As you’ll note from reading the description in the filing, it covers everything from “game software” to “screen savers” to “ring tones for mobile phones.” This is merely standard procedure — it’s highly likely that the trademark is for an actual game. We’ve even uncovered one by Capcom in the past that was eventually announced.

Perhaps DMC — a franchise reboot perhaps? — will be one of Capcom’s four new games at the Tokyo Game Show this week. Perhaps Asura’s Rage and Dragon’s Dogma will be, too.
