This new game has its roots in VR Kanojo, which Illusion originally released for PCs, including via Steam in 2018. While Illusion continued to create more projects like Summer Vacation, it ultimately ceased operations in August 2023.

Former staff members of Illusion went on to form new studios like ILLGAMES and Illumination. The latter is primarily comprised of former VR Kanojo staff members, including the producer Yunayuna. The team is distinguishing the new game by adding a hyphen to the English title. As for the new Japanese title VR na Kanojo, it added the na particle while using the kanji word for Kanojo in lieu of katakana.

Illumination is also holding a crowdfunding session for VR-Kanojo on Campfire. The campaign started on September 2, 2024, and will end on October 19, 2024. The studio has gathered around 16.95 million yen (~$113,650) as of October 15, 2024, which is more than eight times its initial goal of 2 million yen. The campaign has thus gone past the latest stretch goal of 15 million yen, which will add a maid costume and an Omurice meal event.

VR-Kanojo will be available for PCs via Steam in February 2025.
