Through Season 4 Loot Reborn, Blizzard Entertainment has completely overhauled the Codex system in Diablo 4, which includes some massive changes. And honestly, it’s for the better. You can read more about these changes below, which includes quality of life upgrades through this system overhaul.
Codex Changes Explained in Diablo 4 Season 4
What makes these changes great is that salvaging items now provides you with new, unique Codices. These can be accessed from the Occultist, which you can read more about here. Any Codices you’ve unlocked, either through salvaging at the Blacksmith or through completing a Dungeon, can be applied to your gear through the aforementioned Occultist.
Additionally, any Codices you obtain are available across all of your characters. This means that you do not need to re-run Dungeons to obtain these beneficial additional attributes. However, you will still need to farm items for “Best in Slot” percentiles on these attributes. For example, a Codex might have a 1.0 cooldown on a skill, whereas one you obtain later may have a 0.5 cooldown. Salvaging the better item means that it will overwrite the Codex you have obtained, making sure you are always applying the best version of that attribute.
This makes obtaining duplicates worthwhile. As this will, again, be available across all characters. So long as the Codex isn’t Class-specific, you will be able to apply these attributes to any and all gear. Another great change to the system is that the user interface will also tell you if you are applying an attribute that is already on a piece of gear. Which means you can save your gold for costly Masterwork upgrades.
Diablo IVÂ is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. It is also available through the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.
