It’s been a long journey for Nicalis and Pixel, but Cave Story is finally complete… again. The WiiWare version makes its debut today.

Cave Story, if you haven’t played it before, is a freeware PC game made by Daisuke Amaya over the course of five years. You play as a boy who wakes up without his memory in a cave full of Mimigas. With platformer elements and plenty of items to collect, Cave Story feels like a lost NES game inspired by Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

On WiiWare, Cave Story costs 1,200 Wii Points ($12), which is a lot more than zero. However, Nicalis added a number of features to this version of Cave Story. There’s new art, music (options for Cave Story classic are in the game too), a boss rush, time attack mode, a brand new localization, and a second playable character that fans of the PC game will recognize.
