In Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game, Mary Jane had several sneaking missions which received mixed reactions from fans. This may lead many to ask, do you get to play as Mary Jane in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?

How to play as Mary Jane in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

The answer is yes, you play several missions as Mary Jane in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. However, unlike the first game, the Daily Bugle reporter has a lot more options this time around. In fact, Insomniac has listened to feedback to craft better Mary Jane segments in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

While stealth is still primarily the objective in Mary Jane’s missions, she’s no longer hopeless. Thanks to her training in Symkaria with Silver Sable during Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, she can actually handle takedowns all by herself now.

This is of course in tandem with her weapon, a powerful stun gun that she upgrades throughout the storyline. This makes Mary Jane’s segments play closer to something like The Last of Us rather than the more strict and often frustrating sneaking segments of the first game.

I can definitely see challenge runs in the future of players trying to clear all enemies during Mary Jane segments rather than simply sneaking by. The Mary Jane sections are also fairly minimal in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, meaning they never feel like too much when they do pop up in the campaign. Also, since Mary Jane is a journalist in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, her segments typically reveal a lot of background information about the main story.

Usually, while sneaking around, the reporter will uncover essential plot details. While some of this is optional, players should absolutely pay attention when wandering around during her segments. Overall, having Mary Jane playable in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was a gamble on Insomniac’s part after the first game. However, their tweaks made her segments so much better this time around.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is now available exclusively on PlayStation 5.
