The Baldur’s Gate 3 Soft-Step Trial is one of the challenges players can tackle in the Gauntlet of Shar section in Act 2. In the puzzle, players are tasked with sneaking around the level to grab one of the Umbral Gems in the area without being seen.
How to complete the Soft-Step Trial in Baldur’s Gate 3
Before you start the Baldur’s Gate 3 Soft-Step Trial, you want to designate the one character in your party who is the best at stealth. This might be Astarion, Shadowheart, or even your own character. No matter who it is, have them separate from the rest of the party, then go to the far right locked door and pick it.
I’ve highlighted the exact area you need to go to on the map below:
Note that you want to do this before activating the trial itself, as it will make everything easier. Have that person run along through the right corridor until they reach a dead end, then continue along through another locked door on the far right path until you reach some stairs to your left.
Go up the stairs, and the final room in this trial area will be on the right. Lockpick it, and you’ll be able to reach the statue where the Umbral Gem spawns in the trial. The purpose of this is to fully map out and unlock the entire path you will take. You want to plan ahead and know your route because there are traps and shadow creatures hunting you once the trial stars.
To win the challenge, you must make it to the end of the area without being seen. Once you have the map laid out and your path ready, go back to the start. Have either Shadowheart or yourself start the trial using the sacrifice.
Once it begins, the chosen stealth character should follow the predetermined path. Take your time observing the paths the shadows take and sneak past them once the coast is clear. Make your way back to the statue at the end like you did in the trial run. Once there, grab the Umbral Gem to complete the Soft-Step Trial.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PS5 and PC. It will also be released for Xbox Series X/S later in 2023.
