Atlus announced that the company will recast Japanese voice actor Tooru Furuya in the upcoming game Metaphor: ReFantazio, as he was set to portray a character in it. The company hadn’t revealed the role that Furuya was originally cast to perform yet.
The announcement of the recast came alongside news of the reveal of the new voice actor in a follow-up announcement set to appear sometime in July 2024. At the time of writing, it is unclear if the Tooru Furuya character being recast will have an effect on the release date of Metaphor: ReFantazio.
While Atlus vaguely stated that the recast will happen for “a variety of reasons.” Those familiar with the voice actor will know the reason for the casting decision. In late May 2024 it was revealed that 70-year-old Tooru Furuya was involved in an adultery scandal in which the veteran voice actor impregnated a 37-year-old fan, forced her to abort the child, and even assaulted her in at least one instance in their relationship.
Tooru Furuya is a prolific and renowned Japanese voice actor, known for his roles as Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam, Yamcha in Dragon Ball, and Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon, to name a few.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is currently in development and will come out on October 11, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.
