The Nintendo Switch Online app does different things for different games. The overall staple is voice chat. If someone has the app open while playing the game, they can talk to someone visiting their town. (This has been a function in Animal Crossing since Animal Crossing: City Folk, which even had its own microphone on the Nintendo Wii.)

However, this could also mean additional functions may be supported. In Splatoon 2, the Nintendo Switch Online SplatNet lets you use the app to send out invitations to people who you might want to play with you or shop from an online store that can get exclusive items. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you can sort through your Spirits and make teams of them, look through screenshots and videos, and find custom stages to play on.

A number of Animal Crossing: New Horizons features have come up or been hinted at ahead of launch. The ESRB rating suggests there could be in-game purchases like DLC. A save backup feature has also been teased.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will come to the Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020.
