World of Warcraft is an MMORPG that has endured longer than most. Almost twenty years have passed since Blizzard Entertainment took the leap from turning the franchise, which was once a series of beloved RTS game, into a wildly successful MMO. With the success of The War Within, it’s no surprise that new and old players are jumping in to experience what Azeroth has in store. There’s a lot to chew through with World of Warcraft, and given that you don’t progress in a linear fashion like other MMORPGs, you might be wondering when certain expansions released, and what order. Especially if you want to learn about any significant events that happened during each release.
- World of Warcraft (Vanilla) – November 23, 2004
- World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade – January 16, 2007
- World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King – November 13, 2008
- World of Warcraft: Cataclysm – December 7, 2010
- World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria – September 25, 2012
- World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor – November 13, 2014
- World of Warcraft: Legion – August 30, 2016
- World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth – August 13, 2018
- World of Warcraft: Shadowlands – November 23, 2020
- World of Warcraft: Dragonflight – November 28, 2022

While traditional means of playing through the expansions aren’t exactly available, players can use the Timewalking feature in Retail to pick an expansion, or several, of their choosing to run through. While the Classic server does update, adding more expansions over time, that’s another avenue as well.
