Final Fantasy XVI is one of the most anticipated releases for the PlayStation 5, so it’s no wonder that many want to prepare themselves by learning as much as possible about its main characters. The kingdom of Valisthea, in which this new game will take place, is full of political plots, powerful creatures known as Eikons, and giant crystal mountains that give power to the magic of the whole land. To help get started, here is a summary of the characters you will be able to meet throughout this new setting.
Clive Rosfield
Clive is this game’s protagonist and the firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria, one of Valisthea’s political powers. He was expected to be the Dominant of the Phoenix Eikon, but that role fell to his brother Joshua. Clive then trained and won the ducal tournament as proof of his strength. This rewarded him the title of First Shield of Rosaria and tasked him with guarding the Phoenix’s Dominant. Everything would go downfall after a tragedy involving his brother and the dark Eikon Ifrit.
Eikon: Ifrit.
Joshua Rosfield
The second son of the Archduke of Rosaria and Clive’s younger brother. Joshua is known for his kindness and frailness, making him prone to be protected by his elder brother. He was born as the Phoenix Dominant, granting him the duty of becoming the future Archduke, although he wishes his brother was the one chosen for that fate. A dreadful event when he was still young is the starting point in Clive’s quest for vengeance years later.
Eikon: Phoenix, Eikon of Fire.
Jill Warrick
Jill first arrived at Rosaria as a political hostage hailing from the fallen Northern Territories. The Archduke of Rosaria ordered for her to be raised alongside his sons, which led to the three of them being very close. However, the tragedy at the Phoenix Gate separated her from the Rosaria household, only to be found by Clive years later having acquired the power of the Shiva Eikon.
Eikon: Shiva, Eikon of Ice.
Torgal
During one of the Archduke’s expeditions to the Northern Territories, he found Torgal as a baby. The pup joined the Rosaria household as a gift from the Archduke to his sons. Ever since his early years, he has shown loyalty and affection towards Clive, which is why years after the tragedy he joins his party to help him fight once reunited.
Cidolfus Telamon
The Final Fantasy XVI’s iteration of “Cid” is an outlaw looking to create a safe haven for Bearers (people who can naturally cast magic) and Dominants. He once was a renowned soldier of the Royal Army of Waloed, but now he spends his time researching how to live in the magic-barren lands affected by the Blight referred to as deadlands.
Eikon: Ramuh, Eikon of Thunder.
Benedikta Harman
Proficient in both swordplay and intelligence, Benedikta is one of the commanders for the Royal Army of Waloed, the kingdom controlling the eastern half of Valisthea. Known for being coldhearted and ruthless, she appears to have previously met Cidolfus while in the army. Her current mission sends her on a journey to find the “second Eikon of Fire” leading her to Clive’s path.
Eikon: Garuda, Warden of the Wind.
Barnabas Tharmr
The King of Waloed is said to have risen to power due to his skill with the blade, instead of any birthright or wealth. When the beastmen opposed his reign, he put an end to their uprise with the power of his Eikon, Odin. Barnabas is also renowned for his control over the Drake’s Spine Mothercrystal, which power has been crucial to building his mighty army.
Eikon: Odin, Warden of Darkness.
Hugo Kupka
Hugo Kupka was originally a normal soldier of the Dhalmekian Republic’s army but rose to power once his power as the Dominant of Titan awakened. Now he fills the role of the Permanent Economic Adviser to the republic’s parliament securing him a fortune and a say in the decision-making of the nation. However, an encounter with Benedikta Harman may leave him wanting more out of Final Fantasy XVI‘s world.
Eikon: Titan, Eikon of Earth.
Dion Lesage
Dion Lesage is one of the most important characters in the Holy Empire of Sanbreque in Final Fantasy XVI. He’s the Crown Prince and leader of the dragoons, a feared order of knights. The faithful Sanbrequois people worship the emperor as a living incarnation of a deity, but his son is not too far back, his accomplishments in battle being the Dominant of Bahamut, King of Dragons, are an inspiration for many.
Eikon: Bahamut, Warden of Light.
