Times have changed. Cheap plastic toys aren’t as commonly found in the bottom of cereal, but Post remembers the good old days. If you purchase two boxes of Cocoa Pebbles and give them $5 for shipping you can get an eight button USB dance mat for your PC. The accessory is designed to work with Bedrock Dance Academy, an advergame with a customizable character dancing in front of a Cocoa Pebbles banner. When you correctly hit steps the game cheers you on with expressions like “chocolaty goodness”. I laughed when I first saw it because it’s over the top. The hardcore will probably frown at the game, but the existence of Bedrock Dance Academy shows DDR appeals to the mainstream. A marketing company can come up with this idea, not a video game development studio. Compare this to when DDR was described as a niche game just a few years ago.
