Mario RPG max level explained

In Super Mario RPG, the maximum level you can reach in the campaign is 30. No matter how much you grind, you can’t exceed this number, as your experience points become capped at this point in the game. While this might seem like a low number compared to modern role-playing standards, Super Mario RPG was originally released in 1996.

When the Square project debuted in the 90s, it set out to be an accessible crossover between the Nintendo franchise and the RPG genre. As a result, the game’s level-up system is meant to be more on the simple side, which is a big reason it doesn’t go up to level 100 and beyond.

Despite being on the lower side, it still takes quite a bit of grinding to reach level 30 in Super Mario RPG. Unless you use the game’s Breezy difficulty mode, you will likely not reach the level cap until the game’s final levels.

While reaching the max level is not required to beat Super Mario RPG, you will want to reach level 30 if you plan on taking on the secret Culex boss battle. Even at maximum experience points, the hidden Final Fantasy Easter Egg is incredibly difficult to beat.

Super Mario RPG is now available on Nintendo Switch.
