What is the difference between Breezy and Normal difficulty in Super Mario RPG?

When you start a new game in Super Mario RPG, you’ll be prompted to choose between Breezy and Normal difficulty. Essentially, you can think of them as “easy” and “standard” – if you’re a new player or less experienced with RPG gameplay, you may want to choose the more accessible mode. No matter which difficulty option you select, how the story itself plays out won’t change.

These are the core differences between the Breezy and Normal difficulties in Super Mario RPG, specifically:

  • Breezy difficulty:
    • Battles are easier.
    • You can hold more items.
    • Enemies are a bit weaker.
    • You gain levels faster.
    • Attack Action Commands are easier.
  • Normal difficulty:
    • Battles are as challenging as the 1996 original.
    • Characters level up at the same rate as the original Super Mario RPG.
    • You carry fewer items than in Breezy difficulty.

Can I switch between the difficulty options?

Yes! You can change between Breezy and Normal difficulty anytime in Super Mario RPG. To do so, press the Plus (+) button, scroll down to “System,” and select “Settings.” In the Settings menu, you’ll see “Select Difficulty,” where you can use the D-Pad or joystick to move between Breezy and Normal difficulty.

Note that if you switch to Normal difficulty from Breezy, you may lose items due to the lower item carry limit. Anything that can’t fit into the storage box will be lost forever, so make sure you check your inventory first before swapping between the two.
