After you build an outpost in Starfield for the first time, you may be left wondering how to assign a crew to it. You aren’t alone! It took me hours into the campaign before I finally realized what I was missing. Thankfully, the system is pretty straightforward once you understand it.

To assign a crew to an outpost in Starfield, you need to create a “Crew Station,” which costs three Nickel, two Iron, and five Aluminum to build. After you put down the structure, you will then unlock the ability to send crew members to your planet base.

Here are the steps you need to take to assign crew to a Starfield outpost:

• Pause your game, and select the “Ship” tab from the character menu.
• Press the “Y” button on the ship menu to access your “Crew” options.
• On the Crew menu, select a crewmember and press the “X” button to assign them to an outpost you have built.

After you’ve assigned crew to an outpost, they will automatically travel to the location you’ve selected. You can also re-assign companions from the same crew menu by de-selecting the outpost or choosing a new location. It’s important to remember, though, that your outpost must have a crew station first, or it will not show up in your menu options.
