Like No Man’s Sky, you can create an outpost base on just about any planet you visit in Starfield. You can use this location as a home for your character on the remotest planet possible or even near a major starport. Unfortunately, knowing how to build an outpost in Starfield is easier said than done.
How to build an outpost in Starfield on any planet
First and foremost, I suggest completing the prologue in Starfield and visiting the Constellation Lodge on New Atlantis before trying to create your own outpost. From there, your first goal should be to pick the prime planet for your outpost.
Yes, you can build more than one outpost in the game, but you are limited at the beginning to only eight in total. Once you find a spot you like in the galaxy, pull up your scanner. (This is LB on a controller.) From there, press the X button on controller to choose the right spot for your outpost.
The game will guide you and ensure you don’t build the outpost base in a spot that is obstructed or too close to another structure. You can confirm it once you are in the right spot. From there, you are free to upgrade your outpost, build more rooms, and decorate it to your liking. You can build workbenches to research and upgrade items. It’s possible to assign crew members to work at the outpost, mine resources, and even scan the planet for survey data.
However, there is a limitation you’ll find early in the game; you can’t build an outpost everywhere. You are only limited at first to planets that aren’t dangerous. If you want to be able to build an outpost on the most environmentally unfriendly locations in the galaxy, you’ll need to upgrade the skill that allows you to build on planets with extreme cold, radiation, heat, and more.
Starfield is available for Xbox Series X and PC.
