How to Get Winged Pikmin in Pikmin 4

Winged Pikmin are one of those Pikmin 4 varieties that aren’t exactly plentiful. If you want to get some, you’re going to need to head into a cavern and find them. Even then, it won’t be a lot of places where they’ll reside, and you’ll need to revisit particular maps to pick up more.

How to get Winged Pikmin in Pikmin 4

Editor’s Note: To avoid spoilers immediately after launch, this guide will only cover their locations in the first three areas.

I’ve found Winged Pikmin are one of the most useful, but also hardest to find, types in Pikmin 4. This is because they’re such great buddies for carrying stuff around. (I especially loved using them in the fourth map.) However, your most reliable source for finding some is waiting until reaching a single cavern in the third Serene Shores map.

As usual, once you find Winged Pikmin once, the game initiates some quality of life efforts to make it easier to find them again. One is that the Exploration screen selections will show icons on areas letting you know if wild Winged Pikmin are among the types there. Also, after getting some once, directing Oatchi to sniff some out will allow you to go directly to a cavern on the map where more will be.

But basically, here’s the one spot you can find them in the first part of the game.

  • Serene Shores: Below-Grade Discotheque

Note that after the first part of the game, you will eventually happen upon caves where they also “live.” You will also be able to get a Winged Pikmin Onion in the Primordial Thicket area of Pikmin 4.

Why do you want Winged Pikmin in Pikmin 4?

Honestly, they’re just efficient. It’s really easy to get trickier treasures to your base with them, since they’ll fly it over. They’ll be slow about it, but it will get done.

I suppose you could also use them in a fight to target enemies that are higher up or also flying. They aren’t as strong as other types, like Red or Blue ones, though. Also, because Winged Pikmin are so rare, I’d recommend using Yellow Pikmin instead if you can. Yellow Pikmin can be tossed farther than typical types and they’re easier to acquire. Which means it’s less painful if you lose them.

Pikmin 4 is available for the Nintendo Switch.
