Square Enix announced that the recently released Final Fantasy XVI passed three million copies sold, including both digital and physical sales. A major release for Square Enix, Final Fantasy XVI ended up surrounded by several dramatic marketing campaigns, including a sword in the Tower of London, Eikon-themed outfits and 3D ads in Tokyo.
This installment is also the first mainline Final Fantasy title since 2016’s Final Fantasy XV. However, Square continued to release non-mainline titles like Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, as well as the ongoing remake of Final Fantasy VII.Â
This is a banner year for Final Fantasy games. In addition to new releases like this entry and the upcoming Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, Final Fantasy XIV celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2023. It shares a producer with XVI.
Final Fantasy XVI is immediately available on the Playstation 5, with a PC release confirmed but not dated. A free demo is also available, with saves carrying over to the full game.
