Winner: Shin Megami Tensei V
It was a long time coming. Fans had to wait a while for Shin Megami Tensei V, so expectations were high. So meeting them as well as it did? It’s a huge accomplishment. It’s a signature SMT game, with its punishing difficulty and wealth of demons to fight and fuse. It could be a breakout moment for the franchise, earning it the mainstream attention it’s long deserved. Congratulations, SMT V: you’re Siliconera’s Game of the Year 2021.
Tales of Arise
It’s a fresh start for the Tales franchise! Arise looks as good as the series has always played, and smart efforts to modernize systems allow you to get more immersed in the story without so many hindrances. It’s the best that Tales has been in a long, long time, and it’s more than deserving of being a Game of the Year finalist.
Monster Hunter Rise
Rise is a return to the classic Monster Hunter formula. In doing so, it’s able to build on all the work of the previous decades of the game, delivering iterative improvements that longtime fans really appreciate.
