It’s the first anniversary of the PS5 and Jim Ryan, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, made a post on the PlayStation Blog to thank everyone for their support. He also listed the games with the most hours played, as well as made an apology to those who still cannot buy the console.
When the PS5 first came out in November 2020, very few stores had enough to meet the high demand. Though it has sold over 10.1 million units worldwide as of August 2021, it is still difficult to simply buy one on the fly, as the majority of stores usually run out of them as soon as they restock. In the blog post, Ryan acknowledged everyone’s patience and frustration in regards to the lack of supply, and stated that making sure enough units ship every day is a top priority. Part of this is due to the ongoing chip shortage, which caused Sony to reduce its production outlook.
According to the PS5 anniversary blog post, there are currently 360 games available on the PS5. More than 25 games are in development. The list is of the top ten games played on the PS5 is:
- Fortnite
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- FIFA 21
- NBA 2K21
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Destiny 2
- MLB The Show 21
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Demon’s Souls
- NBA 2K22
All of these numbers come from data between November 12, 2020 and September 30, 2021.
As Black Friday approaches, many stores are restocking their shelves with the PlayStation 5. However, the shortage of chips necessary to create PlayStation 5s means that they will remain a rare product going forward.
