D3 Publisher revealed through Famitsu magazine that it will release Earth Defense Force 2 for Nintendo Switch on July 15, 2021. It also teased that it will bring Earth Defense Force 3 to the same platform in Fall 2021. [Thanks, Famitsu and Ryokutya2089.]
The Switch port will be based on the PlayStation Vita remake that was also released worldwide as Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Planet Space. It will include the Air Raider, who was initially added in the Vita version. The development team is working on adjusting controls to make the analog stick movements comfortable. It will also add options to adjust the aiming speed and acceleration.
The magazine also interviewed the series producer Nobuyuki Okajima, who wished he could have started the ports with the first Earth Defense Force. The team abandoned plans to port the first game due to technical difficulties. The first title, which was released for PlayStation 2 in Japan in 2003, also came to Europe as Monster Attack in February 2004. It was never ported to other platforms nor released in North America.
D3 Publisher is also currently working on Earth Defense Force 6, the latest mainline sequel to the series. The latest magazine issue confirmed that the female Wing Diver will make her return with a new outfit. It also introduces two new characters known as the Captain and the Professor.
The Nintendo Switch releases of Earth Defense Force 2 and 3 will be available in Japan on July 15, 2021 and Fall 2021, respectively. Earth Defense Force 6 is slated for release in 2021, with no platforms announced as of yet. D3 Publisher will also bring the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch voxel game Earth Defense Force: World Brothers to the West on May 27, 2021.
