Chocobo GP Trademark Could Refer to Chocobo Racing

Square Enix filed for the Chocobo GP trademark in multiple countries around the world. The latest appeared in the United States on March 9, 2021. This WIPO IP Portal filing came the same month that one was filed in Europe. In both cases, it is good for game software, strategy guidebooks and books, toys, and arcade and amusement facilities. These sorts of filings first appeared in Japan in December 2020 as Chocobo GP and Chocobo Grand Prix. Later, additional ones appeared in Australia and Canada in February 2021.

Multiple Chocobo-related spin-off games are available, but these trademarks refer to the idea of Chocobo racing. This is both a minigame staple in Final Fantasy games, such as Final Fantasy VII, and a stand-alone game. The PlayStation Chocobo Racing game appeared worldwide in 1999, then ended up becoming a PSOne Classic in Japan ten years after its debut.

This comes right as a number of other Final Fantasy-related trademarks turned out to apply to upcoming games. Filings for Ever Crisis and The First Soldier showed up as 2021 began. Both ended up being mobile games. Namely, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, which will retell stories in the compendium, and Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, a battle royale game.
