The One Piece manga has recorded another sales milestone. With the ninety-eighth tankobon volume just released in Japan on February 4, 2021, the title has reached 400 million books sold in Japan alone. Combining it with over 80 million books sold in the rest of the world results in a total worldwide sales amount of over 480 million books. [Thanks, Comic Natalie!]
One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, an aspirational pirate who desires to become the Pirate King. The first-ever chapter was published at Weekly Shonen Jump in July 1997, with its first standalone tankobon volume released in December 1997. Although it is close to approaching a hundred volumes, it has still yet to show signs of ending anytime soon.
The manga creator Eiichiro Oda reached another milestone by publishing the 1000th chapter in early January 2021. Shueisha celebrated it by holding a global character popularity poll. Those who have yet to vote are still able to participate until February 28, 2021. You can also check the top 3 characters voted in each region for the day.
The franchise’s latest console game to date, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, is also performing well. It has surpassed one million copies shipped worldwide as of December 2020, and Bandai Namco also noted that it reached the milestone faster than its prequels. The game is immediately available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
