Eiichiro Oda’s manga, One Piece, has reached a new milestone with the release of its Chapter 1000: “Straw Hat Luffy.” The ninety-seventh volume of the series released in Japan late last year, so it is also approaching its hundredth volume. Currently, there isn’t any official word on when the series is expected to end.
One Piece began in 1997 with the “Romance Dawn” chapter, which depicted the series’ rubbery protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, as a child in his pre-pirate days. The newest chapter, entitled “Straw Hat Luffy,” is a reference to the nickname he acquired after donning a straw hat at the end of the first chapter.
The new chapter, in addition to the two leading up to it, can be read for free on the Viz Media website. The first three chapters and volume seventy-nine are currently free as well, but the volumes that are accessible for free do change periodically.
There is also a live-action version of the manga in development for Netflix. The series was first announced back in 2017 and the first season is expected to have ten episodes and will be written by Matt Owens, who worked on the Netflix series, Luke Cage. Oda asked for patience on the matter last January, 2020.
