People will be able to bring Shinji, Asuka, and Rei home again next year. GKids announced on Twitter that it had picked up the North American rights to release Neon Genesis Evangelion Blu-rays and digital downloads. In 2021, the original show and the Evangelion: Death (True)2 and The End of Evangelion movies will all be released.
Details about the debuts are slim, aside from GKids pointing out that Evangelion Blu-rays haven’t appeared in North America before. (The series has appeared on Blu-ray in Japan.) It did note there will be some sort of “Ultimate Edition” version too.
Should people want to watch some Neon Genesis Evangelion immediately, Netflix has options online and streaming in North America. The anime series and the films Evangelion Death (True)2 and The End of Evangelion are all there.
As for the more recent Rebuild of Evangelion adaptation, Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time has been delayed. It’s the fourth film in a retelling of the story that adds new characters like Mari Illustrious Makinami. It was supposed to appear in theaters in June 2020, but the pandemic delayed it. For a time though, the first three movies were shared online for people to watch during the early months of the pandemic.
GKids’ Neon Genesis Evangelion Blu-ray releases and downloads will arrive in 2021. An official website is now open.
