This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Now that the Baldur’s Gate 3 early access debut is finally upon us, Larian Studios is giving us all a better idea of what exactly we will be able to do. The latest update has to do with who we can be. The launch Baldur’s Gate 3 classes and races have been revealed. When things kick off, we’ll have six roles we could take and, overall, 16 races and subraces to choose from for avatars.

With the Baldur’s Gate 3 races, people will have a little extra variety when it comes to certain species. If you roll a character who is Githyanki or Human, you don’t have to consider extra details. There are no subraces for them. However, Drows, Dwarves, Elves, Half-Elves, Halflings, and Tieflings all have subraces you can choose from to better customize your avatar.

Here’s a list of all of the subraces that fall under those races.

  • Drow: Lolth-Sword Drow or Seldarine Drow
  • Dwarf: Gold Dwarf or Shield Dwarf
  • Elf: High Elf or Wood Elf
  • Half-Elf: Drow Half-Elf, High Half-Elf, or Wood Half-Elf
  • Halfling: Lightfoot Halfling or Strongheart Halfling
  • Tiefling: Asmodeus Tiefling, Mephistopheles Tiefling, or Zariel Tiefling

While there are only six Baldur’s Gate 3 classes at launch, those will have a level of diversity as well. The base classes will be Baldur’s Gate staples: cleric, fighter, ranger, rogue, warlock, and wizard. From there, you’ll also be able to refine things a bit. Larian didn’t note what the subclasses will be, but did say each of the six jobs will have at least two, bringing up the number of possibilities to at least 12.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will come to PCs and Google Stadia on October 6, 2020, though the last update did note that could perhaps slip back a bit. Larian Accounts will allow people to take part in cross-play and use cross-saves across services.
