Paramount Pictures announced an April 8, 2022 release date for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie. The info comes from an update of release date shakeups from Paramount, which also included a delay to A Quiet Place Part 2 and Top Gun: Maverick. [Thanks, Variety.]
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which released in the United States in February 2020, was an enormous box office hit. It pulled over $100 million in its opening weekend. The movie kicked off with $58 million in its domestic opening weekend plus $43 million from the international box office. This was enough to top Detective Pikachu‘s record of the biggest opening weekend by a video game-based film. It went on to gross $146 million domestically and $306 million worldwide. Furthermore, it is currently the second highest-grossing film of 2020.
Director Jeff Fowler and scriptwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller are expected to return for the sequel, which was announced in late May. However, other than the release, Paramount has yet to announce anything on the casting for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2Â movie.
Lastly, here’s a confirmation tweet from Ben Schwartz, the voice behind Sonic:
