20 year-old developer ChaosX (their online handle) has been working on a Unity-based Sonic the Hedgehog fan projects for years, presumably learning game development along the way. Their most famous project, a remake of the infamous 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 called Project ’06, just saw a new demo release this week. This impressive Sonic 2006 fan remake demo build includes every level of Sonic’s “trial campaign,” fully playable.

If you want to try it yourselves it’s an easy executable download from ChaosX’s YouTube channel, but until then, you can watch the new trailer.

The demo appears to be a fully-functioning build, which includes X-Input controller support, various visual settings, menus, the soundtrack, and voices. Being a demo you shouldn’t expect all of Sonic the Hedgehog‘s sins to be absolved yet, but one look at the comments shows how excited the Sonic fan base is about this effort. Considering we’re talking about a Sonic 2006 fan remake here, this is some super impressive work so far.

The official version of Sonic the Hedgehog, called Sonic 2006 by the fans to set it apart, is an infamously bad video game that is often looked at as the peak of the “Sonic Cycle.” There have been ups and downs since, but Sega recently noted it’s taking more time on Sonic projects going forward.

To get on his good side, say nice things about Dragon Quest and Musou. Never mention the Devil May Cry reboot in his presence. Backed Bloodstained on Kickstarter but all his opinions on it are correct regardless.
