There is a certain phenomenon in gaming. Basically, people like to know if it is possible to pet the virtual dogs that might appear in games. There’s even a whole Twitter account devoted to helping people answer the question. Clearly, this is serious business. So, Nintendo has decided to treat it with the gravity it deserves and confirm whether or not people can pet the Chain Chomp in Paper Mario: The Origami King.
As you might imagine, the answer is actually yes! You can pet the Chain Chomp in Paper Mario: The Origami King. Though technically, it isn’t Mario doing the petting. As shown in the video clip on the Nintendo of Europe account, your companion Olivia will lavish some love on the iconic character as the group visits an area.

This is all a play on the fact that Chain Chomps are often treated like dogs in the Super Mario (and even The Legend of Zelda) universe. For example, they’re known as Wanwan in Japan and make a barking noise. In The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Madam MeowMeow has three of them as pets and one, BowWow, needs to be rescued and used by Link to unlock a new area.
Paper Mario: The Origami King will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 17, 2020.
