Another company is wading into the cloud gaming pool. Valve is preparing to dive in. The company announced its Steam Cloud Play beta on SteamWorks. Things are starting slow with Nvidia’s GeForce Now as the first service to start working with the beta in Asia Pacific, North America, and Western Europe, and companies can begin to opt in to make their games compatible.
What this means is that for the moment, People wouldn’t actually be engaging in Steam Cloud Play through the Steam client. Instead, they’d be getting a GeForce Now account and using that service’s client, but now would have the option to have their Steam account and, by extension, the games they own with it ideally there. Steam Cloud compatibility must be offered with games participating in this beta or they must have some sort of online save system to allow people to actually save with Steam Cloud Play.
As for other services, Valve did not confirm compatibility with other cloud gaming options just yet. Instead, at the bottom of the FAQs about Steam Cloud Play, it noted, “We may add additional Steam Cloud Gaming services in the future. At that time we would reach out to you to opt your games into the new service.”
