When Paper Mario: The Origami King was announced on May 14, 2020, the initial video focused on showing the new origami foes Mario will face, a folded up Princess Peach, and different members of Bowser’s army who seem okay with working alongside Mario. We knew a ring-based battle system would be introduced, but it wasn’t immediately shown. Now that the Japanese website has opened, it brings with it an incredibly brief video that looks at how a 360 degree Paper Mario: The Origami King battle will work.

In the video below, Mario is facing four Goombas. Each one is sitting in a slot on a battlefield that consists of a center circle with four rings around it. On the player’s turn, they have 20 seconds to move the battle field and line up the Goombas in a row. Once this has been done, the timer stops and Mario can choose a means of attack. He goes with his old stomping boots for this Paper Mario: The Origami King sample battle and, since he lined up the four Goombas correctly, he can stomp them one after another.

Here’s the full clip looking at the ring-based system.

Paper Mario: The Origami King will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 17, 2020.
