According to Maeda, who is writing the original plot and script himself, this anime project will be ‘a return to roots’, with a focus on telling an emotionally touching story and without more superficial elements like fight scenes and supernatural powers like in previous projects Angel Beats! and Charlotte. The story premise is as follows:
The young girl, Hina, awoke as a god, and foresaw ‘the end of the world’.
From there, she chooses a young boy,
as a follower, to watch over the world and pass the time until the end together.
The character designer for the anime is Na-Ga, one of Key’s prominent character artists. The project has been in the works since 2017, and is described by Maeda as part of Key’s efforts to usher in a new age for the brand, especially during these trying times where PC visual novel culture is slowly dying. (Another project that’s part of these efforts is smartphone title Heaven Burns Red.)
Currently, The Day I Became a God is tentatively set to air beginning in October 2020. A special ‘Prologue Special Program’ will be aired in Japan on Tokyo MX on May 24, 2020, where Maeda will talk about the development of this project. A Blu-Ray Box for Charlotte was also announced for release on October 14, 2020.
