With Nintendo Switch sales now at 55 million, the console has surpassed Nintendo’s fiscal-year forecast of 19.5 million units. Nintendo shared its Switch sales figures as of March 31, 2020 and more in its latest financial report.
First, here’s another look at the updated total unit sales for the Nintendo Switch, 3DS, and Wii U:
Nintendo Switch
- Hardware: 55.77 million units (+3.29 million from the previous quarter)
- Software: 356.24 million units (+110.23)
Nintendo 3DS
- Hardware: 75.77 million units (+0.32)
- Software: 383.11 million units (+4.99)
Wii U
- Hardware: 13.56 million units (-)
- Software: 103.10 million units (+0.25)
Last year, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shared the company forecast of 18 million units for Nintendo Switch sales in the fiscal year ended March 2020.
Here’s a look at the Nintendo Switch sales performance for each quarter for the fiscal year ended March 2020:
- First Quarter (April to June 2019) – 2.13 million units
- Second Quarter (July to September 2019) – 4.8 million units
- Third Quarter (October to December 2019) – 10.81 million units
- Fourth Quarter (January to March 2020) – 3.29 million units
The biggest spike in sales came from the third quarter, which saw the release of Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield in November 2019. The forecast for Switch sales was previously set to 18 million but the company upgraded it to 19.5 million after sharing its third-quarter results.
While Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been selling software and hardware like hotcakes, keep in mind that it launched on March 20, 2020 so the fourth quarter only has about 11 days of sales from the hit title. We can expect to see plenty of carryover sales for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2021.
The Nintendo Switch launched worldwide on March 3, 2017.
