Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Masahiro Sakurai often shares different images on Twitter, and one of the latest offers insight into a much demanded crossover. On April 4, 2020, he offered an early look at the Super Smash Bros Sans Mii costume on Twitter. While it was offered with no context, Undertale creator Toby Fox stepped up with an explanation of what everyone was seeing, which was a prototype design for for the DLC.
It’d be easy to not realize that Sakurai’s Sans picture wasn’t a final version. This initial art looked almost identical to the actual DLC. However, Fox clarified that Sans’ hand was a dead giveaway. The first run actually had four separate fingers and a thumb, while the final option went with a different look. He explained that he was the one to vote against fingers and for the mitten hand.
Originally, the Sans they showed me had tiny, tiny, fingers, but I asked them to replace them with a larger mitten-like hand instead. 最初に見せて貰ったサンズは小さい指があって、「それは…サンズの手じゃなくてMiiの手でしょう」と思ってました。やっぱり手袋みたいな手は最高ですね https://t.co/s1aR76hoS8

Here’s a picture of the final Sans costume, so people can catch the difference. (Also, as a note, other Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Mii costumes for crossover characters do have actual fingers, though that situation can vary on a case-by-case basis.)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available for the Nintendo Switch. The Sans Mii Gunner costume with song is available for 75¢.
