While the coronavirus has put a temporary halt to the Japanese Sonic the Hedgehog theatrical release, it isn’t going to stop Sega’s former SXSW 2020 Sonic panel. Previously announced as a part of the Austin, Texas event, its fate seemed sealed when SXSW was canceled for the first time in its 34-year history. However, Sega has confirmed that it will still run the panel, though it will be held in April 2020 in a different way.
Here’s the tweet confirming the show will go on, just not at SXSW 2020.
We’re sad to see SXSW cancel, but we respect the call and we’re working hard to bring our Sonic Panel content to you all in a new format this April!

Sega’s panel was going to be “Gotta Go Fast: The Official Sonic the Hedgehog Panel” and be held on March 20, 2020. A “special announcement or two” were mentioned as possible topics for the presentation by Sega and Sonic Team. As a reminder, some of the most recent Sonic Team games were Sonic Forces, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, and even Puyo Puyo Tetris.
As for SXSW 2020, it was supposed to be held March 13-22, 2020 in Austin, Texas. However, concerns over the coronavirus COVID-19 led the city to cancel the event.
