At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, a group of professionals held a panel to discuss the topic of digital piracy, and About.com’s Deb Aoki has put together a lengthy transcript of the whole affair, which you can read in two parts at this link.
While a lot of the topics are things that have been covered before, one of the interesting questions considered was if if you could call it a “lost sale” if someone who wouldn’t have bought a piece of content in the first place decided to pirate it. Another was how one figures out the actual impact of illegal downloads to the publishing industries in Yen or Euros or Dollars.
And — this one will be a favourite — whether or not shutting down scanlation aggregators is of real benefit to the publishing side or whether it simply alienates the existing fanbase. The transcript is a little long, but it’s broken up into two parts and it’s well worth the read.
