Hiroshi Matsuyama: “I arrived at Maizuru Elementary School in Fukuoka as ‘Piroya-Sensei of Grade 3 Class-B.’ The fourth-grade students asked questions concerning ‘working in making games.’ I answered questions in the order asked, like an interview. In the second half, I asked the fourth-graders my own question. Conclusion: They all have smartphones (including iPads).”

Hiroshi Matsuyama: “I did a survey with 40 fourth-grade students of Maizuru Elementary School.”

“What do you own?”:

  1. Switch = 99%
  2. PS4 = 10%
  3. Smartphones (including iPad) = 90%

“What manga do you read?”:

  1. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba = 90%
  2. Jump = 5% (two students)
  3. CoroCoro = 70%
  4. Ciao = 10%

“I don’t get how they’re all reading Demon Slayer but don’t even acknowledge the existence of Jump. That’s what’s shocking.”

Since a lot of readers  had questions on the data, Hiroshi Matsuyama provided a follow-up tweet with some extra details:

Hiroshi Matsuyama: “There seems to be a lot of questions, so I’ll answer some. The number of 40 elementary school students isn’t an exact number, it’s just around 40. When I asked the kids what they owned, they all raised their hands for but then a few lowered it last-second ‘because it’s Papa’s game console’ and such, so I went with about 99%.”

Piroya-Sensei visited a middle school a couple of weeks ago:

Hiroshi Matsuyama: “Haruyoshi Junior High School 1st-year Students own:

  • Switch = 95%
  • PS4 = 30%
  • Smartphones = 50%

“Not only are there a bunch of students interested in the game industry. but the ratio for Switch-owners is amazing as ever. Only two students have done a micro-transaction on smartphone.”

CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama is not only cherished by fans for his silly personality and sense of humor but he’s an overall salt of the Earth kind of guy who often goes out of his way for the fans. He once delivered .hack//G.U. Vol. 3//Redemption to a soon-to-be blind fan, but in order to get it several days earlier, he personally delivered the ROM of the game before its release. You can read more about that in our earlier report.
