Marvelous Entertainment’s strategy of slowing down paid off. This quarter (April 1, 2010 to June 30, 2010) their video game division booked a profit.

Marvelous made 71 million yen ($830,000) during this segment, a huge change from last year where Marvelous lost 131 million yen ($1.5 million). Sales were down sharply, though, 55% compared to the same period. Marvelous only released a Hitman Reborn game, No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise, and Ikki Tousen: Xross Impact in Japan this quarter. Rising Star Games, which contributed to earnings in past quarters, now work with Marvelous under a licensing agreement.

Reduced overhead and advertising spending were attributed to this quarter’s positive results. While the profit was mainly from expense cuts, Marvelous is at least back in the black.
