On September 12 at Japan’s Game Awards, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate won an unprecedented five awards, with director Masahiro Sakurai taking the stage to receive the prizes. During the ceremony, he shared a few touching words about his inspiration to continue on with the project, as well as some views on character choices. [Thanks, naruki!]

“I’m sorry for bringing this to a bit of a personal note, but making Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch was the last mission former president Iwata… Iwata-san gave me. I’m not going to say that he’s watching over us, and happy for us… For humans, if you pass away, then that’s it. However, what I learned from Iwata-san, to work on what you need to do as hard as you can, to put everything you’ve got into it, is a lesson I treasure greatly. And now that the DLC development has been extended, we’ve been given another chance to make new Fighters. For me, I’ll be working hard from now on as well, so I hope you will support me. Thank you very much.”
He also mentioned a bit on character choices:

“”When is my favorite character, Iron Man, joining Smash Bros.?”, “When is Goku joining Smash?” are things I hear a lot from overseas, but in the end, Smash Bros. will basically be about video games.”

- Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Award
- Japanese games – Global Award
- Bestseller Award
- Award for Excellency
- Grand Prize
