A new Oculus Rift model has been announced. The Oculus Rift S is a Rift platform compatible headset that connects to peoples’ PCs and doesn’t require external sensors. It will cost $399 when it makes its debut in Spring 2019.
The Oculus Rift S is co-designed with Lenovo and features the Oculus Insight technology used in the Oculus Quest. This means it uses computer vision algorithms to determine tracking, so external sensors aren’t needed. It will also have a stereo-correct Passthrough+ feature and rely on a single cable system.
Both the Oculus Rift and Oculus Rift S will rely on the Rift platform. This means there will be backward compatibility and future compatibility for the existing headset. It also means there will still be software updates for the older headset.
Here is the Oculus Rift S announcement trailer.
The Oculus Rift S will launch in Spring 2019. The official website is now open.
