There is bad news for people who were looking forward to picking up Hollow Knight physical copies in 2019. Team Cherry, the game’s developer, has announced they will not be made. The deal made with Skybound Games, which would have brought Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One copies of the game to retail stores, has been canceled. As a reminder, Hollow Knight physical copies were announced back in August 2018, and the release date was tentatively set for Spring 2019.
Here is the full statement from Team Cherry, in which it explains the size of the team is what held back a physical release. While the news is disappointing, the developer doesn’t rule out eventually working on a smaller physical production run in the future.
Just a short one today Gang,
We’re regretfully announcing the cancellation of physical copies of Hollow Knight and our partnership with Skybound Games.
As a team of 3 people still in intensive production of Hollow Knight, taking the game into the retail space (even with the extensive assistance of Skybound) proved more work than we could reasonably manage.
In future we will investigate other ways to deliver physical versions of Hollow Knight, though likely that will be in smaller quantities.
We’d like to thank Skybound for the amazing opportunity they provided, and for their professionalism and enthusiasm the whole way.
Hollow Knight is immediately available digitally on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
