Last week, Japan had a bye week in sales without any new titles in the top-20, but we still saw strong numbers coming from Monster Hunter XX and Nintendo Switch to maintain their top spots. Here’s the latest from Japanese sales tracker Media Create with a look at software and hardware sales from the week of March 20 through March 26, 2017.
Monster Hunter XX is #1 again after 280,293 in its second week to pass the million-seller mark. This would be the first time for a Monster Hunter title to take two weeks to hit a million since Monster Hunter Tri when it sold about 520,000 copies on its debut for Wii. However, these are still considered strong numbers in today’s market nonetheless and it also continued helping the 3DS maintain high sales numbers.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild went back up to #2 with 39,103 copies sold. 1-2-Switch also managed to take #3, showing that it and Zelda are the mainstay of Switch software sales in Japan. It should also be noted that Deus EX: Mankind Divided was a new release but we won’t get to see how it performed until later this week as it failed to make the top-20.
We should also give a warm round of applause to Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS that has been continuing the good fight by charting #14 with 6,801 and hitting the million mark with 1,002,323 copies sold on 3DS.
The Nintendo Switch saw a big boost in sales going from 49,913 units sold the week prior to 78,441, which was likely thanks to a restock for retailers. Nintendo’s console now has now sold 518,503 units to date in Japan going by Media Create’s numbers.
As for the rest of the consoles, we saw relatively stable numbers for the most part, but what was a little baffling was seeing the PS3 console maintain its numbers with 2,930 units sold after selling 2,212 units before that when it sold a mere 639 units on the prior week to that.
The top-20 chart for the week is as follows:
