Shmup DreadStar uses elements of RPGS, giving players experience points for the ships they shoot down that they can use to make their own starship even better.

DreadStar tasks players with shooting down dozens of enemy ships as they fly through the game’s five stages. As they blow up enemies, they’ll gain experience, level up, and get skill points to assign to various aspects of the ship. Players can do this whenever they like as well, warping out of a stage to improve their ship before coming back to finish the fight.

They’ll also be able to upgrade the armor, engine, shields, and special items of each of the game’s four ships, and have access to ten different weapons.
