<< How to read and understand sales

Last week, Japan had several new releases including a good handful from the West with Dambuster Studios’ open world shooter Homefront the Revolution, id Software’s DOOM, and  Gearbox’s Battleborn. Media Create provides us with a look at video game sales data for software and hardware that sold from the week of May 16 through May 22, 2016.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End maintained the #1 spot with 21,155 units sold in its second week, while Kirby: Planet Robobot also kept its #2 with 19,383. From here the total sales take a bit of a dip with Homefront the Revolution at #3 with 9,422 copies sold in its first week in Japan.

Yo-kai Watch: Sangokushi is at #4 with 8,913 units and in #5 we have another new title with Kenka Bancho Otome, the first entry in the series with a female protagonist where you get to date thugs, which sold 8,534 units in its debut week.

As far as other new titles go, the new DOOM game made it to #7 of the week in Japan with 6,164 units sold. The popular manga series My Hero Academia recently began airing its anime but its 3DS title My Hero Academia: Battle for All didn’t do as well with only 5,607 units sold in its first week, putting it at #9.

Battleborn also made its debut with 5,145 units sold for #11. And finally, Otomate’s latest visual novel in Period Cube: Amadeus of the Birdcage released last week and sold 3,850 units to take #16.

While last week saw a decent amount of new releases, albeit most from smaller titles or Western games that don’t have much of a following in Japan, overall software sales were a bit on the lower end and the same goes for hardware which mostly saw a little drop in sales across all platforms compared to the week before.
