Emeric Thoa of indie studio The Game Bakers says that the idea behind Furi came to him 10 years ago. When asked what his dream game would be at the time, Thoa said it “would be one long boss fight.”

“A boss fight against an opponent similar to you, not a gigantic creature or a demon,” he continued. “A boss fight that felt like a duel — a tense, exhausting, and utterly rewarding duel.”

Furi isn’t quite one long boss fight. Instead, it’s a series of intense duels against tough opponents that each have unique looks and fighting styles. You’ll need to work out how to overcome each one as you fight them.

Furi’s combat gameplay is designed with Japanese games in mind — ultra fast-paced and responsive,” Thoa says. “Your character moves as soon as you send an input. Skills and reflexes are required to dodge and parry the enemy’s attacks.”

While Furi does look like it’s all sword fighting it isn’t. It also has elements of bullet hell shooters as you dodge around arenas blasting a gun. The sword fighting side is perhaps the biggest part of its personality, however, as its look is designed by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki.

Furi will be coming to PC and PlayStation 4 in 2016.
