A group of Final Fantasy VII fans have been working on a turning the game into a 2D action game under the title Final Fantasy VII: Re-Imagined.

The fans say that they thought back to classic side-scrolling games such as Dragons and Dungeons: Chronicles of Mystara and Streets of Rage when coming up with the idea. “We thought about how we can incorporate some of the FFVII game play elements, such as Materia and summoning of Guardian Force into a Hack and Slash genre,” they write on the project’s website.

The project was announced with the trailer you can watch above. Of course, so as to not get in trouble with Square Enix, the fans have stated very clearly that this is a non-profit project. So, yes, it will be available for free when it’s released. A playable demo is said to be coming soon.
