Spike Chunsoft revealed Cyber Danganronpa VR, a Project Morpheus tech demo based on Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, at Hong Kong’s Ani-Com show. The Cyber Danganronpa VR demo is set during a class trial (spoiler alert: it’s Ultimate Fighter Sakura Ogami’s  case) and players can turn their head to watch characters debate.

While the PSP and Vita versions use 2D character cutouts, Cyber Dangnaronpa VR has all of the characters rendered in 3D. This tech demo is Spike Chunsoft’s first project for PlayStation 4 and they picked Unreal Engine 4 to quickly complete the tech demo.

During the nonstop debate part of a class trial players can turn their head towards characters they want to rebuttal and press R2 to fire a truth bullet. The demo ends with a punishment scene that isn’t playable, but players will be able to see Monokuma’s punishment from a first person perspective. Danganronpa producer Yoshinori Terasawa put this sequence in so players can feel the horror, but Monokuma’s presence kind of lightens the mood.

Terasawa said he was inspired by Summer Lesson, Bandai Namco and Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada’s Project Morpheus demo, because it was a brand new experience. When asked why he didn’t make a demo of the shooter spinoff Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, Terasawa replied that other companies will be able to create VR shooting games. Terasawa wanted to highlight what Spike Chunsoft could do uniquely.
