Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid have revealed their next Nintendo 3DS title. It’s a “Metroidvania” game titled Xeodrifter.

Xeodrifter came about as a result of Renegade Kid founder Jools Watsham doing a mock-up for a 2D “demake” of Moon Chronicles, the developer’s Nintendo DS/3DS first-person shooter. Eventually, it evolved into a completely separate title.

“I am a huge fan of Super Metroid, Metroid Zero Mission, and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and have always wanted to develop a game in that sub-genre,” Watsham writes in a developer diary on GoNintendo. He goes on to say  that the game will be a smaller, bite-sized experience, but that there will be enough secrets to find to keep more dedicated players busy for a little longer.

Xeodrifter will use a “Neo NES” look with limited colour usage, and the game will support stereoscopic 3D for an effect similar to Mutant Mudds, where the foreground layer is scaled up to be twice as large as the background layer. You can view a 3D screenshot for the game using your 3DS in the developer diary.

Xeodrifter doesn’t have a release date yet. Watsham says in his developer diary that Renegade Kid will resume work on Treasurenauts, another of their games, once development of Xeodrifter is complete.
