If you thought Sengoku Basara 4 would just tack on the previously announced Warring Periods Creation mode, you can now eat your boots. We’ve got word on just how massive the extra mode will be—on top of its already-considerable story mode for nearly every character.

For starters, when we last talked about it we mentioned the game would let you select your battles and so forth. While that’s still there, the game will now take it on its own route through history, with fights chaining together as a sequence of “If Masamune gets defeated here, what happens then?”

This makes for quite a number of possible situations and you’ll have to replay the mode multiple times in order to experience every possible tree. Additionally, you’ll have to purchase and marshall your forces and then decide where to attack from the list of possible divergent historical battles. Battles will come in the form of regular fights, break outs, omens, derivations and good ol’ one-on-one. Some of these will only trigger if previous (hidden) requisites are met too.

As mentioned, because this is a what-if series scenario, it’s possible to get foes to end up together side by side, such as a shot of Saika Magoichi and Tsuruhime fighting together as well.

If you thought that still wasn’t enough, certain paths will open up either drama scenes or full-on animation sequences (Done by Production I.G.!) which you can then view that progress your special route with a new, widely divergent storyline. I shudder to think how anyone will actually finish this without some sort of guidebook or flowchart on hand…

Sengoku Basara 4 will be out for PlayStation 3 on the 23rd of January, 2014.
